Public transport

Tickets - Melbourne and Victoria

  • Buses, trains and trams in Melbourne use the same ticket. Before you buy a ticket ask if your destination is Zone 1 or if you need a Zone 2 ticket too
  • A VLine ticket can be used in Melbourne for most onward journeys - ask at your train station how far your VLine ticket can take you
  • If you carry a Health Care Card with you, you can get a concession ticket
  • After 6pm, a 2-hour ticket will give you travel for the whole night in Melbourne
  • Use Journey Planner to check times, routes and maps www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au

If you are approached by an inspector, you have the right to:

  • Request the inspector to write down their name and identification
  • Ask them to fully explain the offence and the penalty process
  • Ask them for a travel permit for the rest of your trip if they take your ticket

Inspectors have the right to:

  • Keep your ticket as evidence of your offence
  • Ask for your name and address, and call someone to verify your identity if they believe you are not telling the truth

If you can't pay the fine, you can apply:

  • To pay the fine in installments
  • For an extension on the due date
  • For the fine to be cancelled because of special circumstances, e.g. homelessness
  • Go to court to defend your case

If you can't pay a fine, get advice from the public transport company or your worker immediately. The longer you leave it, the more serious the situation will become.
